William is an example of what a boon social media has been to our rescue efforts. Through Facebook, one of the ATRVA rescue volunteers received a notice that there was an Airedale at a one-day adoption event given by a local shelter. She hustled right over there and found a pitiful-looking Aire-boy, very much in need of attention. Despite signs of possible arthritis, he happily jumped into her car to begin his journey to a better life.

William in pain |
Picked up as a stray, he, of course, had worms and a matted coat, but, of more serious concern, a tumor visible on his side, another on one of his front legs, badly damaged teeth, and such pain in his spine this characteristically tough Airedale could not tolerate being stretched out for his x-ray without anesthetic.
William was scheduled into surgery immediately. The vet removed some damaged teeth, cleaned out a nasty fistula created by his dental issues, treated him for a pinched nerve in his back, and, thank goodness, determined that the tumors, three in all, were benign. The vet did identify signs of the suspected arthritis in his spine, but thought William, estimated to be seven years old, could enjoy several more years of robust activity. In recovering from the surgery, William showed just how spunky, if not cooperative, he was! Time and again he proved quite ingenious at getting his cone off and ripping out stitches, requiring several trips back to the vet for repairs!
No one would now recognize William as the sad shelter-puppy he once was. He has at last found true love as the only dog of a dog-devoted man. The two of them are constant companions, frequently seen around town enjoying a leisurely stroll, running together, or dining at a table for two on the patios of the local, dog-friendly eateries.
