AIREDALE AIRE-FRESHNERS

The Surprise Incentive winner tonight was MaryAnne Tillman of Glenolden, PA.   MaryAnne won this grooming apron embroidered by Diana Fielder and donated by Debbie Butler. Congratulations, MaryAnne and thank you for supporting the Airedale Quilt Fundraiser and National Airedale Rescue.

I made these quite a few years ago as part of a fundraiser for ATMCNY Airedale Rescue and must have made 30 of them over the course of a week.  I bought wooden “fence” pieces with a little ledge at a craft store and glued the Airedale (unpainted) on the ledge against the fencing.  I glued dried plant pieces on the or around the fence.  I did not paint the Airedales.  I'm sorry I don't have any photos for this project - didn't have enough time to dig out my "tools" or make the dough and cut them out.  Please use your imagination!  Picture an Airedale standing for examination or down in the playbow position.  They look like gingerbread cookies!

You could also tie twine or ribbon as a hanger and hang it in your car or from a curtain rod or cabinet pull.

These would also make nice Christmas ornaments.  However, warning, they are very fragile so don't roll them too thin.

Note:  These were labor intensive, but something different and my house smelled WONDERFUL!

STEP 1
Ingredients
Makes 12 – 15 ornaments
¾ cup applesauce
1 bottle (4.12 oz.) Ground Cinnamon

STEP 2
Tools Needed
Airedale Cookie Cutters (Standing, Playbow)
Drinking Straw
Twine or Colorful Ribbon

 DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 200°F.  Mix applesauce and cinnamon in a small bowl until a smooth ball of dough is formed.  (You may need to use your hands to incorporate all of the cinnamon)  Using about ¼ of the dough at a time, roll dough to 1/4-inch to 1/3-inch thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap.  Peel off top sheet of plastic wrap.  Cut dough into desired shapes with 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters.  Make a hole at the top of the ornament with a drinking straw.  Place ornament on baking sheet.
2. Bake 2 ½ hours.  Cool ornaments on wire rack (or to dry ornaments at room temperature, carefully place them on wire rack.  Let stand 1 to 2 day or until thoroughly dry, turning occasionally).
3. Insert ribbon or twine through holes and tie to hang.  Decorate with opaque paint markers, found in arts and crafts stores, if desired.
