DUNCAN, ROBIN AND QUINN OF OKLAHOMA

Quinn -  Before

 Quinn was turned over to OKAR along with his parents. He was infested with fleas and ticks and weighed in at only 7.2 lbs. Not good for an 8-week old puppy. After being treated for all the bugs and given lots of good food and love, Quinn is now living the good life with his Mom, Dad, and cat.

It's hard enough to see adult dogs in this condition, but to see a puppy in such a state is horrendous.

Duncan and Robin came into Oklahoma Airedale Rescue (OKAR_ along with their eight-week old puppy, Quinn. They were a breeder pair and lived outside with 9 or 10 other dogs. When they arrived, they were filthy and covered with fleas and ticks. They both had tick disease and had to be treated. Robin had a 2-hour spay surgery due to excessive bleeding and a rip in her uterus. Duncan was neutered and got infected, so was a guest at the vet hospital for a few days so he could be closely monitored. Now that Robin and Duncan are feeling better, they are waiting for their forever homes. Both have that carefree Airedale attitude that we all love!

Duncan and Robin have a $900 vet bill for the extensive work they received. They were spayed/neutered, given vaccinations, and had bloodwork done to determine that they were positive for tick disease. Miraculously, they were negative for heartworm.

On 7/12 - Wonderful news! Duncan and Robin are adopted! Duncan is loving his new home and Robin will be moving south in a few days! OKAR couldn't be happier for two deserving Airedales!!

On 7/16 - Yesterday was such a happy day for dear Robin! She traveled from Tulsa, OK to Houston, TX to her forever home! Thank you to all the wonderful Aire-Angels who helped with transport. Robin, now Ivy, is getting used to her gigantic upgrade in life as a much loved and cared for member of the family!

RECIPE - AUNT BERNIE'S BLUEBERRY PIE

This fresh blueberry pie recipe was on last year's blog, but I thought it delicious enough to share again. And see Lydia Ross's Rhubarb Ginger Simple Syrup in a separate page which makes a refreshing summer drink.

Aunt Bernie’s Blueberry Pie

4 Pints fresh blueberries

1/4 cup water

2 Tablespoons + 2 Teaspoons cornstarch

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 Cup water

Ready made Graham Cracker Crust or baked pie shell

· Mix together 1/4 c water & cornstarch.

· Mix 1/4 cup water + 1/4 cup sugar + 1 pint blueberries.

· Add cornstarch, sugar, water and berries together

· Cook until thickened (7-10 min).

· Mash the berries to make a sauce mixture.

· Remove from heat and cool 10-15 min.

· Then add the remaining berries and mix carefully until the berries are coated.

· Put in a piecrust. I use graham cracker ready-made or you can use a baked pie shell

· Cool for several hours in refrigerator.

Enjoy. It's quick and easy.

RECIPE - RHUBARB GINGER SIMPLE SYRUP

Rhubarb Ginger simple syrup from the kitchen of Lydia Ross
Makes about 3- 8oz jars

8 cups chopped rhubarb
½ cup chopped fresh ginger or you can use dried non crystalized ginger (ginger is optional)
1 cup water
1 cup sugar

Put in a large pot and bring to the boil. Turn heat to simmer and cook for 20-30 min. The rhubarb should be very soft(like falling apart) and the liquid beginning to thicken slightly.

Remove from heat. Let steep for 40 minutes.

Then strain through a fine sieve into a large bowl. You can let it sit for an hour and drip naturally, then using the back of your spoon squeeze out a little more syrup.

Toss out rhubarb and ginger.

You can use jars, bottles or whatever to bottle up your syrup. Keep in the fridge up to 2 wks.

Use this syrup to make great summertime drinks. Use any unsweetened beverage to mix it with, make a rhubarb ginger vodka martini, use it with club soda.. use as much or as little as you like, let your imagination run wild!

Here it is with club soda and a sprig of lemon balm.

Congratulations Libby and Kah Lin!  Thank you for supporting the 2014 Airedale Quilting Bee Fundraiser.

This year I had the privilege of assembling the quilt top. One by one the 18 blocks and the centerpiece block arrived in the mail over a two-month period. Each block member anxiously emailed that their block had shipped and the watch began. Since I still work full time, my partner Jim was on mail delivery watch. Each carefully packaged tube cocooned a beautifully crafted block with an Airedale head sporting a charming hat. It was like Christmas!! Each time I marveled at the artwork, choice of fabrics, and the lovingly stitched design. With each block I believed it couldn’t get any better and with each block I continued to be amazed.

When I had received about two thirds of the blocks, I made a pilgrimage to one of my favorite quilt shops in Ballston Spa. They have a wonderful selection of batik fabrics. When I arrived there was a group of women assembled for a class in the work room adjacent to the salesroom. As I began to unfurl the blocks on the fabric cutting table for the shop owner, the quilters began to trickle out of the work room when they overheard the shop owner’s oohs and aahs. Soon the cutting table was surrounded by quilters. The shop owner was asking if I would like to display the finished quilt in her shop during the Saratoga Springs summer season to sell tickets. The quilters who began as spectators started pulling bolts of fabric off the shelves and placing quilt blocks against them. One of the benefits of being a member of the quilter’s sorority is that you never have to select sashing and borders alone. Whenever you go into a shop, you always have 3 or 4 people who want to collaborate with you on the project you are working on. You always have a variety of opinions. I narrowed the selections, made my purchases, and headed home full of enthusiasm to begin trimming the blocks and putting the top together.

Block by block and row by row, the top came together. I could not wait to lay it out on my bed to take photos. I went through withdrawal when it was time to pack it up to mail it to Lydia Ross in Washington State.

MARLA/MAJERLE OF ARIZONA (SWAT)

“Marla” was named for the Animal Control Officer, who contacted Sidney Hardie of SWAT. Marla showed up at some guy’s ranch one weekend and he gave her food and water. She disappeared one night and then returned limping. It was obvious that Marla's leg was broken and because of a lack of funds to care for her, the Animal Control Officer was going to be forced to have her euthanized. Marla was such a sweetheart that the animal control officer searched for Airedale Rescue on the internet and called SWAT’s 800 number to see if they would take her. She had no chip, a very old and frayed collar, no tags and from the condition of her coat, it was doubtful that anyone had paid much attention to her for quite a while. She was very, very sweet, wagging her tail the whole time, loved getting petted and wanted to give kisses. It was estimated that she was probably 2 years old or younger based on the teeth. She had a proper docked tail and a very pretty face. AND she was in heat, naturally! She had a broken ankle that needed to be repaired once the swelling had gone down in a couple of weeks. And she also needed to be bathed, clipped and spayed.

The ER visit was $1,000+. The actual ankle surgery was estimated to be between $2,000 and $4,000. It is apparently a complicated surgery because so many little bones in the ankle were shattered and displaced. After Marla’s surgery, Dr. Boulay called to report that the damage was as bad as he feared. In layman’s terms, there are three rows of little bones at the wrist and the bottom row was basically destroyed. He used the bone fragments as a graft, packed it in all the spaces, pinned everything together and put her in a cast. The bone would fuse and she won’t even notice it once she is healed. Luckily, all of the damage was below where the joint moves. She would in a cast for 8 to 10 weeks and he said the hardest part would be as she begins to feel better and wants to run and play. The cast would rub and create sores if she was too active.

 

Poor Marla, the Pinchushion, must have wondered when it would ever end. After she healed, she needed some of her teeth attended to and possibly removed. For whatever reason, maybe chewing on rocks, or a chain, several of her teeth were worn down and some had the pulp exposed. After her dental visit, five of her teeth were damaged so severely they needed to be removed. Others that had been ground down to the gum line were okay for now and maybe for forever. The good news is that her teeth that are not damaged are white and tartar free. Sweet Marla, one more operation to remove the pins.

Marla update: Marla is now with her new family after living several months at Sidney’s “Airedale Retreat”. They all hit it off immediately. Marla and Nash were chasing each other around the yard, and Nash showed off for the new girl by jumping into the pool when they were investigating that part of the yard. This was something he apparently never does until Marla appeared on the scene. Had had been missing his big sister who died a while ago and was delighted to have a new girl to boss him around. Sidney said they were a really nice family and she felt comfortable about Marla joining them even though she and the other Airedales were going to miss her a lot!

The new family is changing her name slightly to Marley, only spelled Majerle. Her family explained, “We started the sports theme with Jordan because she was the AireJordan, then with Nash we couldn’t help going with Thunder Dan Majerle (pronounced m ah r l ee). The latest update from Majerle’s folks: “She is doing great. She got a pair of my reading glasses off the table and chewed them up, but other than that, she has been a little angel. We got the dog door put in, and Nash is having issues going through but The Majerle is flying in and out.” AND, MOST RECENTLY: Things are going great! They run around crazy all day. Nash has figured out the door and they are in and out constantly. They wrestle and play bitey face before bed every night. They kill a poor toy pretty much daily! We've bought a few that say they are indestructible! They apparently weren't tested on Airedales!
