Jane Miller said "I did this as a prize at one of the Airedale Auctions. A lady won a drawing of their dog. However, this lady did it for a friend that had just lost their Dale. This is what Sully loved to do. And this is the way they wanted to remember him!"

"A Bad Hair Day" is signed by Emily and is number 28 of 75. It measures about 9” x 10".

Emily Trevor was a very fine watercolor and print artist who adored Airedales. Her last Airedale, Kramer, was adopted from NEAR. Recently gone to the Rainbow Bridge to meet him and the ones who preceded him, part of Emily's obit read: "Emily, surely one of nature's most vibrant brushstrokes, graced our landscape with all her colors for eight plus decades. Exuberant, wise, silly, profound, brave, forthright, she was a one-woman parade. Our lifescape is infinitely richer because Emily was here." Sounds like an Airedale!

Quilted Block

When the Hats theme was decided on, I didn’t know what I would do. Then I saw a Roberta Sparr notecard on a friend’s facebook timeline. It was an Airedale on a Harley and I thought “that’s what I want to do”. So I asked my artist, Patty Eisenbraun, what she thought and this is what she came up with. There’s a motorcycle history in my early married years and I always enjoyed riding on the back of my husband’s Harley. And whenever our Airedales heard “his” bike coming down the street, they got all excited. And it fits in with my current Airedale’s personality. Pinky is on the small side but packs a lot of power – she’s a rough and tumble kind of girl even at 9 years old!

This is my 3rd year making a block for the Rescue Quilt and I could see the progress I’ve made in my stitching. They are more even and closer together and for the most part I was able to progress relatively quickly. I only pricked myself a few times w/the needle and no blood was drawn this year nor were fingers sewn to the background fabric as in previous years! I did seem to have a problem though with the ears and the beard. It took me a while to decide on what fabrics to use and then to manipulate the cut out fabric for those parts into shape. Smaller pieces still give me trouble or maybe it’s just that as I get older, my hands aren’t as nimble. I still need the cheater magnifying reading glasses to thread the needle and see what I am sewing!

Here are some of my progress photos. Most of us used a vinyl overlay with the pattern drawn on it to help us place our pieces on the pieced background, and I found this new technique very helpful this year so that I had my pieces positioned correctly on the background. I also struggled a bit w/the beard and the ears for some reason and cut out several different pattern pieces for each from different materials. I felt that my drawing was probably the simplest to do of all the blocks with few pointed pieces for which I was very, very thankful! Points are hard to do!!

BONUS QUILT -" HARMONY IN RED"

Harmony in Red

"Harmony in Red" displayed in last year's Hospitality Room
 at the Headquarters Hotel

Carolyn Finlayson and Sharon DeBoer have collaborated on making this BEAUTIFUL, large lap or wall redwork quilt titled "Harmony in Red". It is a triple Irish Chain pattern made from three shades of red fabric and a soft, creamy white accent fabric, featuring a variety of 7 embroidered Airedale squares in the white non-chain blocks enhanced with beautifully pieced blocks. The embroidered Airedale squares are outlined with a small border, maybe a quarter inch wide or so, of a red print fabric and it really makes the Airedales POP! It measures approximately 54 inches wide by 72 inches long. Sharon did the pieced blocks, and Carolyn did the redwork and embroidered Airedales, as well as the quilting, binding and finishing.

This quilt was won in 2013 by a non-Airedale person, who generously donated it back to The Bee so it could be offered again in 2014 to help raise money for National Airedale Rescue. It created quite a bit of buzz at Montgomery last year where it was displayed in the Hospitality Room one evening and again in the Quilt Display Tent at the Sunday show site. EVERYONE wanted to win it! Now you have a 2nd chance!!

Sweet Little Sandy - what a happy looking girl

Sandy is a sweet little Airedale who was pulled from an area shelter. The story is that she was left behind by her original owner and some elderly neighbors started feeding her. When that got to be too much, she wound up in the shelter. OKAR (Oklahoma Airedale Rescue) got her to one of their veterinarians, who quickly discovered that she was pregnant. She eventually gave birth to 11 healthy puppies. DNA results show that they are Airedale/Yorkie/Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen mixes! (WOW!)

Sandy has a forever home and the puppies are in the process of
finding their homes. Although our generous vet, Dr. Jones, has donated a kennel space for the pups, Sandy's medical bills are very high. She had a C-section and has needed extra care and meds due to her poor health when she arrived into rescue.

Carolyn's Interpretation - Finished Quilted Block

No Airedale quilt would be complete without a trio of puppies getting into mischief. These delightful puppies are having fun with a lovely hat they found lying around the house. We are seeing them at the beginning of their exploration before they destroy this beautiful hat. I imagine the puppy under the hat’s brim is about to devour the flower and the two puppies holding the hat’s ribbons are about to have a tug of war Airedale style!

The SoftFlex Ball is one of Pinky's favorite toys. She loves to chase it, grab it, and then lay down and squish it with her mouth. She has several of these balls, and she has me trained to throw them for her and also to retrieve them! Pinky doesn't retrieve - she's trained me to do that!  And I've seen on Sidney Hardie's Facebook page where here fosters love playing w/their snake.  And every Airedale loves to chase tennis balls - these squeak!

INTRODUCING THE 2014 AIREDALE RESCUE QUILT - "HATtitude"

For those who read to the end of this post, there was a special one-day drawing.  There were 6 people who commented on the blog today and their names were put in a "hat" and the winner of the special drawing is Marcia Hogsed.  Marcia actually won last year's quilt, Airedales Around Town.  Tonight Marcia won 1 main quilt ticket donated by Lydia Ross.  Congratulations, Marcia!  See it pays to read to the very end.  You never know what you might miss out on.

This year’s quilt is titled “HATtitude” and the theme, as denoted by the name, is “Hats” - Airedales wearing all sorts of hats just as they fill all sorts of roles in our lives and hearts.

The quilt design layout was done by Patty Eisenbraun. This year’s quilt is different in that the background is a pieced background consisting of several neutral patterned fabrics pieced by Sharon DeBoer to form a pleasing backdrop to the colorful Airedale blocks. The ARTISTS this year for the blocks are Mary Blood, Patty Eisenbraun, Linda Hobbet, Rose Knowles, and Jane Miller. The individual blocks were appliqued by individual block makers using brightly colored fabrics, and the quilt top was assembled by Karen Brown. Karin Rainier, an award winning quilter, quilted the 2014 Airedale Rescue quilt and Lydia Ross finished the quilt. The label was made by Rebecca Eash.

This year’s blocks include:
· CLOWN and JESTER because Airedales always make us laugh with their antics
· NURSE because Airedales like to comfort us when we are sick or sad and many make wonderful therapy dogs
· KING because Airedales are the King of the Terriers
· MOTORCYCLE MAMA and PIRATE because Airedales can be rebellious, a challenge and life is never dull with an Airedale around
· RED HAT LADY because Airedales are a very sociable breed
· PURPLE HAT LADY to honor the Senior Airedales, who are so loving and sweet
· CARMEN MIRANDA and KENTUCKY DERBY DAME because Airedales can be the life of the party
· ELF because Airedales are mischievous
· WIZARD because Airedales are a magical breed
· CHEF mainly because Airedales are so often food motivated and when they finish their dinner, they come to us and want to have a bite or two of what we are having
· ARTIST because some Airedales have been known to redecorate the house and all Airedales paint our lives with joy
· CAT IN THE HAT just because Airedales can be quirky
· HUNTER because Airedales have a strong prey drive and make excellent hunters
· TENNIS PLAYER because Airedales like a great chase - be it a tennis ball, or anything else that goes fast
· TOP HAT GENT because when an Airedale is groomed to the max, it looks very elegant
· And the CENTERPIECE block is a wonderful drawing of a delightful trio of Airedale puppies playing and having fun with someone’s lovely HAT.
